In October of 2004, Peruvian journalist Hugo Coya visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp known as the “final station.”

While there he wondered if any Peruvians were among the victims.

[Hugo Coya, Author, “Final Station”]:

“Well I found to my amazement and to my horror 22 people. Twenty-two people born in Peru who died in the Holocaust but were born here, who had gone to Europe and had fallen into the clutches of Nazism”.

AP: Gruesome charges detailed against suspected Nazi

Friday, August 20th, 2010

The Associated Press

Saturday, July 31, 2010 | 12:22 a.m.

The world’s third most wanted Nazi suspect was involved in the entire process of killing Jews at the Belzec death camp: from taking victims from trains to pushing them into gas chambers to throwing corpses into mass graves, a German court said Thursday.

Samuel Kunz, an 88-year-old who has lived undisturbed for decades, was indicted last week on charges of involvement in the killing of 430,000 Jews _ after a career as an employee in a government ministry and obscurity in a quiet village just outside the former West German capital of Bonn.

On Thursday the court in Bonn that indicted him revealed more details of the charges against him, describing in gruesome detail some of the crimes the suspected former death camp guard allegedly committed in occupied Poland from January 1942 to July 1943.

LAtimes: The Oliver Stone danger

Friday, August 20th, 2010

The filmmaker’s ‘contextualizing’ of Hitler and Stalin as not-such-terrible-guys could disable our future resolve against mega-evil.

By Abraham Cooper

July 30, 2010

First, full disclosure: I am the Left Coast representative of the Jewish conspiratorial lobby that Oliver Stone was fretting over in his recent interview with London’s Sunday Times. You know, the Jews, whose “domination of the media” prevent Hitler and Stalin from being portrayed “in context.”

It seems the once and future wunderkind was also frustrated that no one understands that it was the Russians who were damaged more than the Jews during World War II. I think he had the score of 25 million or 30 million to 6 million. As a storm of protest from Jewish groups, but not Stone’s peers, rolled across the Internet and media, Stone apologized, declaring that the Holocaust was an “atrocity,” much to the relief of his publicist, if not outraged Holocaust survivors.

JJLA: Holocaust education comes to Comic-Con Posted by Adam Wills

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

When legendary comic book artist Neal Adams was 10 years old, he swore he would never get involved in anything related to the Holocaust.

In the early 1950s, Adams was living in Germany, where his father was stationed with the American occupation forces. The military screened three hours of concentration camp footage to the soldiers, their spouses and children “before they showed it to America, so they knew how much people could take,” Adams told an audience at Comic-Con on Friday. “I can tell you, after seeing that I didn’t talk to anyone for a week.”

BERLIN — A suspected former Nazi death camp guard has been charged with participating in the murder of 430,000 Jews and other crimes during the Third Reich, German prosecutors said Wednesday.

Samuel Kunz, 88, was informed last week of his indictment on charges including participation in the murder of 430,000 Jews at the Belzec death camp in occupied Poland, where he allegedly served as a guard from January 1942 to July 1943, prosecutor Christoph Goeke in Dortmund said.

Kunz is also charged with murder over “personal excesses” in which he allegedly shot a total of 10 Jews in two other incidents, Goeke told The Associated Press.

NYtimes: Women’s Role in Holocaust May Exceed Old Notions

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

By ISABEL KERSHNER

JERUSALEM — Amid the horrors of the Holocaust, the atrocities perpetrated by a few brutal women have always stood out, like aberrations of nature.

There were notorious camp guards like Ilse Koch and Irma Grese. And lesser known killers like Erna Petri, the wife of an SS officer and a mother who was convicted of shooting to death six Jewish children in Nazi-occupied Poland; or Johanna Altvater Zelle, a German secretary accused of child murder in the Volodymyr-Volynskyy ghetto in Nazi-occupied Ukraine.

The Nazi killing machine was undoubtedly a male-dominated affair. But according to new research, the participation of German women in the genocide, as perpetrators, accomplices or passive witnesses, was far greater than previously thought.

AP: German artist revives names of Holocaust victims

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

By KIRSTEN GRIESHABER (AP) – Jul 7, 2010

BERLIN — Artist Gunter Demnig carefully pried a cobblestone out of the sidewalk on Friedrichstrasse in downtown Berlin and replaced it with a shiny square brass plaque.

“Davisco Asriel lived here,” the inscription read. “Born in 1882. Deported 25.1.1942. Murdered in Riga.”

It was the latest of more than 25,000 such plaques that Demnig has installed across Europe in front of the homes of people later killed in the Holocaust.

He calls his works “Stolpersteine,” or stumbling stones, and says that with his art he wants to bring back the names of the millions of Jews, gays, resistance fighters and Gypsies who perished at the hands of the Nazis between 1933 and 1945.

Historians at Yad Vashem conference focus on low-level perpetrators.

Talkbacks (3)

While previous generations of Holocaust researchers have focused on the Nazis’ strategic extermination of Europe’s minorities, at Yad Vashem’s summer seminar this week, a new generation of scholars from all over the world are discussing a bottom-up approach to answer the question of who killed the Jews.

The workshop, titled “The Persecution and Murder of the Jews: A Grassroots Perspective,” began Monday at Yad Vashem in the capital and will continue for a week. Participants will look at the involvement of local peoples throughout Europe – from the women perpetrators in the fields of Ukraine and Poland to the judges in France – in the killing of approximately 6 million Jews in less than four years.
